Audience Theories -
Audience Research -
In order for our music video to be successful we need to aim it at a specific target audience. To do this we need to work out who our target audience is and get a better understanding of the different types of audiences within the age range 12-20. There are multiple different methods in which we can research this and all have both positives and negatives about them.
To ensure we get the most accurate and reliable data, we have decided to collect our data in more than one way. We have chosen to do a questionnaire and interviews. We chose to do a questionnaire as it can be sent to a larger audience and the information can be retrieved quickly an easily. We have chosen to do interviews alongside this to get a deeper understanding of peoples opinions in order to tailor our video specifically to this target audience.

We got a total of 17 responses from a range of people from different audiences.
As can be seen from the pie chart, more females than males answered the questionnaire. This could make our results biased.
The Indie Pop genre (our chosen genre) is the second most popular genre after Pop. This means our music video has to appeal to a wide audience over the age range of 12-20. However, we can see from these results that our target audience enjoy a range of different genres and so by incorporating codes and conventions from other genres we would still be appealing to our target audience.
According to our target audience, performance from the artist or band is important in making a music video successful. This could be because it allows the viewer to engage with the band members more and get a feel for what the band or artist may be like during a live performance. They also thought that choreographed dance is important. This was not something we had intended on including in our music video however, we will now consider it in order to make our music video appeal to our target audience.
The results of this showed that on average people rated the importance of their appearance through fashion choice at 7.16. This suggests that appearance and fashion are important to our target audience. This means that our actors in our music video need to be well presented in order to be appealing to our target audience.
The most popular shops are Topshop with 47% of the participants voting it as the shop that they buy the majority of their clothes from. This was followed by H&M with 29%. These are large companies that are all over the country and therefore dominate the market. These types of shops have new trends and fashions in all the time, this means that people shop here in order to keep up with the latest fashions. If we choose our costumes for our actors from shops like these we will be conforming to these latest fashions and trends which will appeal to our target audience more.
The results of this question contradict the previous one. The audience all listen to similar music and shop in the same places however, many of them believe that they are not influenced by music videos into what they buy. Most people voted 5/10 suggesting that they are not sure about whether they are influenced by what the see in music videos. This could also mean that people are being influenced by what they see in music videos but are unaware of it. This could be down to the music they listen to or other influences from social media.
Considering the majority of the participants were female, I thought that these results would be higher. From the opinion line we can see that the majority of people said either 5 or 8. This could be due to the wide variety of audiences from different music genres and male influences.
Finally, this question suggest that casual clothes are more associated with the indie genre and so when doing our costume research, we can plan our research around this area.
